I am trying to connect two computers (a desktop and a laptop) to the internet using a single modem. So far, I have connected both computers using network cards and have them talking to each other. Can you tell me how I find the Windows 98 SE Internet Connection Sharing utility? Also, is there a better way of sharing one modem between two computers?

To install Internet Connection Sharing open Add/Remove Programs from Control Panel, click the Windows Setup tab. Scroll down to Internet Tools, click Details, then select it from the list of items shown on the Internet Tools dialog box.
It's fairly easy to set up, though not the most robust way of sharing a modem between two computers.
If you have an old, spare computer (a 386 with 6MB of RAM or more), a 'proper' modem (in other words, not one that only works under Windows) and a modicum of technical savvy, you could set up a Freesco Gateway.
This is a free Linux-based package that you can get from www.freesco.org, which works as a highly effective firewall. It also protects your network from unauthorised access via the internet.
